How many redirects are too many?
More than two. http to https to www to a trailing slash is four round trips before the page starts; each one is a full connection on a mobile network.
What does a 302 in the chain mean?
A temporary redirect. Search engines keep the old URL, and browsers do not cache it, so the hop is paid on every visit.
