    IP address lookup: common questions

What is my public IP address?

Your public IP address is the internet address that websites see when you connect. This tool detects it from your browser's connection and displays it above. If you use a VPN or proxy, it normally shows that service's exit address.

How do I look up someone else's IP address?

Enter a public IPv4 or IPv6 address and choose Look up IP. You can see its estimated location and network provider without creating an account. Enter an address, such as 8.8.8.8, rather than a website URL.

Can an IP address reveal someone's exact location or identity?

No. IP geolocation estimates the country, region and city associated with a network. Coordinates may point to an ISP facility or a city center. They do not identify a person's home, name or precise physical location.

Why is the location wrong when I use a VPN or mobile data?

A VPN routes traffic through an exit server, so its location can appear instead of yours. Mobile carriers, corporate gateways and shared networks can also route traffic through another city. Geolocation databases can be out of date.

What is the difference between IPv4, IPv6 and a private IP?

IPv4 uses four numbers separated by dots, while IPv6 uses hexadecimal groups separated by colons. Both can be public internet addresses. Private addresses such as 192.168.1.1 belong to local networks and have no public geolocation.

What do ISP and ASN mean?

ISP means internet service provider. An ASN, or Autonomous System Number, identifies a network that routes internet traffic. The organization may be a broadband provider, mobile carrier, hosting company or VPN operator. It is not necessarily the person using the address.

Where do the location details come from?

ServerInspector sends the requested IP address to IPWhois over HTTPS to retrieve available geolocation and network details. Results may be cached for up to six hours. Missing fields mean the provider has no available value. This tool does not classify an address as a VPN, proxy or security threat.
